Social Media Content Creators Fueling Parallel Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Medication

An underground market for unlicensed slimming medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Investigational Drug Acquiring Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to message these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could assist individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in individuals administering substances of uncertain source.

Several professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing price of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators attempt to circumvent the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Content Removal

According to TikTok, the service has removed problematic content and banned associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Marketplace Activities

Research also discovered groups with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with thousands of users, filled with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and detailed guides for preparing or injecting at home.

Within minutes of joining one group, a vendor shared contact information, where the majority of transactions take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and promised shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Details and Costs

Inside these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a injector should be used, sellers give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Security Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively moderated dangerous content on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is valid, these digital products may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to recent price rises for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her team has already encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially serious health risks”.
